google maps doesn’t work that well for driving because it only pinpoints your exact location on the map; therefore, it would be like using mapquest etc. Not really a gps unit…

Depends on what phone and where you are using it
In the US I reckon you could use blackra1n for 3g and 3gs pretty simple in 10 min, my pal did that in sweden the day he got iphone(he had never jailbreaked a phone before). I myself have a 2g right now and thats more tough since I live in sweden (I need to unlock and crack the new firmware etc). Try use sites like Devteam or whats its called to support and read on!
